Description

A broad and shallow diagonal die gouge positioned above the eagle's neck on the reverse defines this 1923-P Peace Dollar variety, discovered by Christian Merlo in February 2008. Cataloged as VAM-1BC with classification II 1, reverse die B2A, interest level I-2, and R-5 rarity (estimated 1-30 known), the variety's distinctive feature lies in the gouge's character — described as both broad and shallow, indicating a wide but relatively gentle impression rather than a deep narrow scratch. The diagonal orientation across the area above the eagle's neck places the gouge in a prominent position on de Francisci's reverse design, where the perched eagle's neck and head represent one of the most inspected areas for VAM attribution. Die gouges of this type may result from foreign material dragging across the die surface, tool contact during die handling, or debris caught between die and holder during installation. The broadness of the impression suggests the causative object had a flat or rounded contact surface rather than a sharp point. The 1923 Philadelphia Peace Dollar had the series' second-highest mintage at over 30 million, yet this die marriage remains rare at R-5. Struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm with the Latin "TRVST" inscription. Look for the characteristic broad, shallow diagonal gouge above the eagle's neck on the reverse.
