Description

A rusted die variety of particular visual interest, VAM-1BB (Revised) documents a Philadelphia Mint Peace Dollar whose obverse die developed rust pitting between the rays below the letter B in LIBERTY. Cataloged with die pair classification II1 - B2a, the pitting manifests as raised dots on struck coins — each dot corresponding to a pit in the die where rust eroded the hardened steel surface before the next production run. Die rust typically occurs when dies are stored in humid conditions between uses, and the resulting pitted surfaces create a distinctive stippled texture on affected design areas. Rated I-2 for significance and R-5 for rarity, with an estimated 200 to 400 surviving examples. The reverse also contributes to the variety's profile, with rays above DOLL slightly doubled on the right side.
