Description

Attributed by David Close, the 1923-P VAM-1AS documents a broad, shallow vertical die gouge passing through RV in TRVST on the obverse, extending upward into Liberty's hair and downward below the letters. Classified as I-2 R-5, the R-5 rarity places this at 31 to 75 estimated survivors. Die gouges of this scale — broad enough to span two letters and extend beyond them — typically result from contact with a foreign object during die handling or installation, scoring a shallow channel across the die face that transferred as a raised ridge on every coin struck. The vertical orientation through TRVST and into the hair suggests the die was scratched while being inserted into or removed from the press. The use of TRVST rather than TRUST on the Peace Dollar reflects de Francisci's classical Latin V for U. Struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver at 38.1mm and 26.73 grams during the design's third year.
