VAM-1AJ reveals a short, shallow die gouge across the lower part of the third ray from the top above the eagle on the 1923 Peace Dollar reverse. Discovered by David Close, this variety is classified as II 1 - B2a with R-5 rarity, placing the estimated known population at 30–75 examples. The reverse of Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar features a perched bald eagle before radiating sun rays — an intentionally symbolic design representing peace after World War I. Die gouges on the rays are particularly diagnostic because they interrupt the clean, linear elements of the design with a distinct mark perpendicular or oblique to the ray direction. The 1923 Philadelphia Peace Dollar boasts the highest mintage in the series at over 30 million pieces, making it one of the most accessible dates for variety hunting. Despite the large production run, R-5 varieties like VAM-1AJ demonstrate that specific die marriages saw limited use before the die was retired or replaced.
