1923-P VAM-1AH

Description

Discovered in May 2005 and revised in 2010, the 1923-P VAM-1AH is cataloged as 1AH (revised) II 1 - B2a with the title Die File Lines Upper Reverse #2, Clashed Obverse N, rated I-3 R-5. The obverse die II 1 shows a die clash mark: an incuse tip of the N of UNUM from the reverse appears in the neck rear depression of Liberty's portrait, positioned as an incuse triangle opposite the T of TRVST on the obverse. This clash geometry results from the reverse die striking the obverse face-to-face without a planchet, impressing incuse mirror images of each design. The reverse die B2a shows the response: heavy file lines above the eagle's left wing and around the eagle's right shoulder and DOL in DOLLAR, applied to remove the clash marks. A collector note specifies this is a different die than VAM-1AF, which shares a similar clashed configuration. The I-3 R-5 rating indicates scarcity, with R-5 corresponding to an estimated 31 to 75 known examples. Philadelphia Peace Dollars of 1923 circulated widely and are found across a wide grade range.
