1923-P VAM-1AE2

Description

Discovered in 2021 by Roger Beckner, the 1923-P VAM-1AE2 is cataloged as II 1 - B1a with the title Die Breaks Hair Rear #2, Left Side Neck Point, rated I-2 R-6. The R-6 designation corresponds to an estimated population of 13 to 30 known examples in the VAM rarity framework. The obverse die II 1 shows a die crack across the bottom of the neck with displaced field material at the left neck point, a structural fracture that deformed the die surface adjacent to Liberty's neck contour. The B1a reverse is the earlier type for the Peace Dollar series. An important cautionary note accompanies this variety: it has not been conclusively demonstrated that the break in the hair of VAM-1AE exists both with and without the neck crack seen in VAM-1AE2, leaving open whether VAM-1AE2 represents a die progression or a distinct configuration. Roger Beckner's discovery letter was referenced in the original submission. Philadelphia Peace Dollars of 1923 carry no mintmark. The R-6 rarity makes confirmed attributions meaningful population data points for the evolving 1923-P catalog.
