Description

Designated 1AB1 II 1 - B2a (Beveled Field Below TRVST) with rarity ratings of I-3 R-4, this Peace Dollar variety from the 1923 Philadelphia Mint shows a beveled field next to the rim below the word TRVST — the distinctive Latin spelling used on Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar reverse, where the V replaces the U in TRUST. The obverse die, classified II 1, displays the beveled area resulting from a damaged die that created an angled transition between the flat field and the rim, wider and positioned differently than the similar feature on VAM-1K. Catalog records for this entry underwent significant reorganization: VAM-1AU was eliminated and absorbed into VAM-1AB1, while the original VAM-1AB was split to create both VAM-1AB1 and VAM-1AB2 as updated in April 2010. Such reclassification reflects ongoing refinement of the Peace Dollar VAM catalog as researchers better understand die-stage progression and variety relationships. An R-4 rarity rating indicates an estimated surviving population in the hundreds, placing this variety in the moderately scarce range.
