Description

Discovered by David Close in 2004, this Philadelphia Mint Peace Dollar is designated VAM-1AA under Classification II 1, B2a, documenting a Die Break in the Hair at the Lower Rear. A diagonal die break appears in the hair on the back of Liberty's head next to the lower horizontal hair strands. Rated I-3 R-6, indicating moderate interest with very few known survivors. VAM-1AA belongs to the broader "extra hair" group of 1923-P die marriages that also includes VAM-1B, VAM-1BK, VAM-1V, VAM-1W, VAM-1Y, VAM-1AB 2, VAM-1AE, VAM-1AN2, and VAM-1AR. Prior to Close's 2004 attribution, NGC may have certified examples under the VAM-1B-2b designation. Struck in 90% silver (0.7734 oz ASW) at Philadelphia during the height of Peace Dollar production, the 1923-P boasted one of the series' highest mintages. Anthony de Francisci's radiant Liberty Head design, featuring the word TRVST on the reverse, remains among the most admired 20th-century coin designs. The R-6 rarity rating places survivorship between 13 and 30 known examples, making this a challenging but rewarding target for Peace Dollar VAM specialists.
