Description

Credited to David Close, VAM-1B of the 1923-D Peace Dollar features a dramatic die break that transformed an otherwise common die marriage into a sought-after variety. Cataloged as 1B II 1 · B2a with rarity ratings of I-3 and R-6, this variety's obverse die break begins at the top left of the digit 1 and extends diagonally upward to the right, reaching into Liberty's neck. The break traverses from the denticles through the numeral and into the portrait — a substantial failure that produced a bold raised ridge of displaced metal on struck coins. An additional break in the Y of LIBERTY adds further visual interest. The reverse carries its own break extending from the mintmark across to the opposite side of the coin. Graded examples have appeared across multiple services, with recorded grades including NGC 64+, SEGS 63, PCGS 62, ANACS 62, SEGS 58, and ANACS 55, confirming that surviving specimens span a range of conditions.
