Description

Logan McKechnie discovered this Denver Peace dollar in January 2011. Cataloged as VAM-1AX2 (revised) under classification II 1 with a B2a reverse, titled Die Gouge Below E, Breaks Below L, Y and 1, carrying a rarity of I-3 and R-6. The obverse documents progressive die failure through multiple crack systems. A die crack runs through L in Liberty down to the rim, widening slightly into a break. Another crack on the left middle and right top tip of Y extends to the rim where it widens into a short break. From the middle of the 1, a crack extends to the neck point with a slight displaced field break along its path. A radial die crack from the rim reaches up to a horizontal crack on the right side of the 1, with an additional displaced field break on the right side of the digit. The displaced field breaks at multiple locations indicate significant die stress, with metal pushed outward from the crack lines.
