1923-D VAM-1AO2

Description

Discovered by Dave Borofski in February 2006 and revised in 2010 from the original VAM-1AO listing, this Denver Mint Peace Dollar is designated VAM-1AO2 under Classification II1, B2a, rated I-3 R-6 for rarity. The variety documents Die Gouges Back of Tiara Band and Eye combined with Die Breaks Above M and Above VST. On the obverse, a heavy die crack runs through TRV with a break developing above VST on late die states, progressing from a crack to a displaced field break as the die deteriorated. The reverse shows a die crack through the middle of MERICA with a break at the rim at the top left of M. The R-6 rarity rating indicates an estimated surviving population of 13 to 30 pieces, placing VAM-1AO2 among the scarcer Peace Dollar varieties. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1923-D Peace Dollar carries Anthony de Francisci's Liberty design with the distinctive TRVST spelling on the reverse. The dual die breaks on both obverse and reverse document extensive die failure, with the late die state progression above VST providing collectors with die-state sequencing opportunities.
