1923-D VAM-1AO

Description

Discovered by Dave Borofski in February 2006, VAM-1AO of the 1923-D Peace Dollar features a die break above the letter M on the reverse, accompanied by a heavy obverse die crack through the letters TRV. Cataloged as 1AO II 1 B2a with I-2 importance and R-6 rarity estimating 13 to 30 known specimens, this variety documents advanced die failure on both sides. The reverse carries a die crack through the middle of MERICA with a break at the rim at the top left of M, where the crack widened sufficiently for metal to displace outward. The obverse heavy die crack through TRV of TRUST indicates widespread structural deterioration in this die pair. Peace Dollar dies were prone to cracking because the bold high-relief design concentrated striking pressure on prominent design elements. The combination of an obverse crack through TRV and a reverse break above M suggests the die pair was nearing retirement when these coins were struck. Denver produced Peace Dollars from 1922 through 1927, and the 1923-D had a moderate mintage. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, this scarce variety preserves dual-sided die deterioration with a distinctive reverse break above M.
