Description
David Close discovered this Denver Mint Peace Dollar variety, cataloged as VAM-1AL, classified II 1, B2a (K-3 Rim Cud #5) with an impact rating of I-2 and an extraordinary rarity of R-6, meaning fewer than 13 specimens are believed to exist. The obverse exhibits a die break above the Y in LIBERTY that extends through the top bar vee junction left, runs up to the rim, then descends below the Y in a jagged line back to the rim, forming a retained rim cud. The breaks through the Y were caused by the high pressure of the flat field area on the opposite reverse die, which concentrated stress on this section of the obverse die. A rim cud forms when a die break connects to the rim edge, and the K-3 severity rating indicates a substantial crack. The R-6 rarity places this among the most elusive Peace Dollar varieties known, making confirmed examples highly prized by VAM specialists. =1923-D VAM-1AL K-3 Rim Cud #5= Discovered by David Close.
