Error
Description
Discovered by Brian Raines on September 22, 2011, the 1923-D VAM-1AF2 carries die classification II1 with attribution code B2a under the title Die Breaks Above I and at Y, rated I-3 R-7 — the highest standard VAM rarity level, indicating fewer than 13 confirmed examples. This later die state exhibits advanced structural failure: a triangular break above the I of IN has fully raised to form a displaced mesa of field metal, while a die crack extends to the far right of Y in LIBERTY over to the rim. A separate narrow raised break with a crack to the left shows a displaced field break developing between T and Y of LIBERTY. The progressive cracking across IN and LIBERTY indicates extensive die fatigue concentrated in the obverse lettering zone. The 1923-D Peace Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint. The R-7 rarity makes VAM-1AF2 one of the rarest documented Peace Dollar varieties, and the advanced die break progression provides a dramatic example of terminal die failure.
