Description

Originally cataloged as VAM-1AC in the Van Allen-Mallis system, this 1923-D Peace Dollar variety has been eliminated as a distinct classification — research determined it to be a Late Die State of VAM-1D, and it was reclassified as VAM-1D2. Larry Briggs discovered the variety in July 2004, and its initial cataloging reflected an observable die break below the Y in LIBERTY that appeared to represent a separate die pairing. Closer study revealed the die break was a progressive feature of the same working die used for VAM-1D in a more advanced state of deterioration — the late die state produced cracking not yet present on earlier-struck VAM-1D examples. This reclassification illustrates the living nature of the VAM catalog, where ongoing research periodically consolidates varieties as die-state relationships become clearer. Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver at 26.73 grams on 38.1mm planchets. Collectors encountering coins attributed as VAM-1AC should note the updated classification to VAM-1D2, reflecting its status as a late die state rather than a separate variety.
