Discovered by David Close in 2014, the 1922-P Peace Dollar VAM-1Y is attributed for obverse die scratches running between the letters N and G — likely feed finger scratches left by the planchet-feeding mechanism contacting the die face during press operation. These fine parallel scratches between N and G provide the primary diagnostic for identifying this die marriage. Classified with die pair designation II1-B1a and assigned a rarity of R-5 (estimated 31 to 75 specimens known), this variety occupies the moderate-rarity tier where confirmed examples exist in sufficient numbers for active trading but remain scarce enough to reward dedicated cherrypicking. The 1922 Philadelphia Mint Peace Dollar holds the highest mintage in the series at 51,737,000 pieces — a volume that generated an enormous number of working die pairs and a rich catalog of VAM varieties awaiting discovery decades after the coins were struck. Anthony de Francisci's obverse depicts Liberty wearing a radiant crown, while the reverse shows an eagle perched on a rock with olive branch and the word PEACE below.
