Description

Discovered in 2012, the 1922-P VAM-1X documents two distinct die characteristics: a small rim cud at the O in ONE on the reverse and a diagnostic die marker on the obverse. The reverse B1a die shows a tiny shallow rim cud extending into the field at the letter O — a small but permanent die fracture where a fragment detached from the rim, leaving a void in the die that filled with metal during striking. The obverse Type II die 1 carries a faint thin vertical die scratch at the third ray from the front of Liberty's crown, providing a secondary identification point. The B1a reverse type distinguishes this from the more common B2a reverse seen on many 1922 Peace Dollar VAMs. Rated I-2 R-6 (estimated 5-12 known), this is among the scarcer 1922-P Peace Dollar varieties despite the date's massive mintage of over 51 million. The small rim cud at O in ONE represents the initial stage of cud formation — a tiny fracture rather than the dramatic breaks seen on full cud varieties — and its location at a specific letter provides a precise diagnostic reference. The 1922 Peace Dollar's enormous production required an extraordinary number of working dies, and the systematic documentation of even small rim cuds like this contributes to the comprehensive map of die failures across the date's die inventory.
