Discovered by David Close, the 1922-P Peace Dollar VAM-1M "Die Scratch 9" is classified as B1a with an I-2 interest rating and R-5 rarity, placing the estimated population at just 13 to 30 confirmed specimens. The defining diagnostic is a thin die scratch positioned to the left of the numeral 9 in the date, extending upward to reach the E in WE of IN GOD WE TRVST — the Latin spelling distinctive to Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar design. This Obverse II1 type die scratch is a fine incuse line on the die surface that transferred as a raised mark on struck coins, traceable along its path from the date area to the motto. The 1922 Philadelphia issue carries the highest mintage in the entire Peace Dollar series at 51,737,000 pieces, making the scarcity of VAM-1M attributable entirely to the die characteristic rather than the host coin's availability. Struck in 90% silver at 26.73 grams on 38.1mm planchets, this variety rewards careful examination of the area between the 9 and the WE inscription under moderate magnification to trace the full extent of the scratch.
