Description
Documented in 2012, the 1922-P VAM-1G2 preserves a scarce die break variety on the highest-mintage Peace Dollar date, rated R-6 for rarity (an estimated 301 to 1,000 surviving) and I-3 for higher collector interest. Designated 1G2 II1 with reverse die B1a (Die Break Rear Rays), the reverse exhibits a short radial die crack at U in UNITED with very slight field displacement break — the metal has shifted along the fracture plane, creating a displaced break rather than a simple hairline crack. Field displacement indicates the fracture had progressed beyond a superficial crack to structural failure where die segments shifted relative to each other, with each subsequent strike driving metal into the widening gap. The R-6 rarity suggests this die was pulled from service quickly after the break developed, limiting coins struck in this state. De Francisci's Peace Dollar saw its highest-ever production at Philadelphia in 1922, exceeding 51 million coins. Struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm. Examine U in UNITED for the short radial crack and slight field displacement.
