Description

Thomas Petrosie's 2017 discovery of VAM-1AE for the 1922 Peace Dollar records a die break above IN that traces a dramatic path across the obverse. The die crack begins below the G of GOD, travels upward through the N of IN, and connects to another crack at L, with a displaced field break at N and above. Displaced field breaks represent an advanced stage of die deterioration where the cracked section has begun to separate, producing a raised area of displaced metal on struck coins often visible without magnification. The progression from simple crack to displaced break indicates this die was near the end of its useful life. The 1922 Philadelphia Peace Dollar saw massive production, and dies were used until failure made continued striking impractical. Cataloged as plate 1AE II1 - B2a I-2 R-5, the R-5 rarity rating estimates 1 to 5 known specimens, making this genuinely scarce within the deep 1922-P census. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, this Peace Dollar preserves a detailed record of progressive die failure across multiple obverse design elements.
