Error
Description
Attributed by Jody Faust in 2017 and classified as II1 B2a with rarity indicators I-2 R-6, this 1922 Philadelphia Mint Peace Dollar is designated Die Break B. The obverse displays a die crack through the upper rays below E, continuing through B in LIBERTY up to the rim left of B with a displaced field break where metal was pushed by the widening fracture. On the reverse, die scratches pass through U and M of UNUM, accompanied by heavy polishing around the eagle's neck and shoulder. The displaced field break near B represents advanced die deterioration where the crack widened enough to displace metal during striking. The 1922-P is the highest-mintage Philadelphia Peace Dollar with over 51 million struck, yet the R-6 rarity of 13 to 30 known examples suggests the die failed quickly after the crack developed, limiting coins struck from this state. Jody Faust's 2017 attribution continues expanding the Peace Dollar VAM catalog for this prolific date.
