Description

Discovered in 2011 by David Close, the 1921-P VAM-1Y "Radial Break Hair Strands" Peace dollar documents a radial die crack at the 4 o'clock position on the obverse, accompanied by a slight field displacement break. Cataloged as 1Y I1 - Aa (Radial Break Hair Strands), this variety appears on the high-relief 1921 Peace dollar — the only year of the series struck in high relief before production switched to the standard low-relief format in 1922. Anthony de Francisci's Liberty head design was rendered in dramatically deeper relief for the 1921 issue, creating a coin of extraordinary sculptural beauty but also one that presented serious manufacturing challenges: the deep incuse cavities required to produce high-relief coins subjected dies to vastly greater striking pressures, leading to accelerated die wear and increased frequency of die failures. Philadelphia struck approximately 1.01 million high-relief Peace dollars in 1921, a modest mintage that reflects both the late-year introduction of the design (December 1921) and the production difficulties inherent in the high-relief format. The radial die crack at 4 o'clock extends outward from the center of the die toward the rim, following the natural stress lines that radiate from the deepest points of the design cavity, and the slight field displacement break indicates the crack had progressed to the point where the die surface on one side shifted minutely relative to the other. David Close's identification of this variety expanded the VAM-1 sub-variety census for the 1921-P date, where the Y suffix indicates extensive prior documentation of other die characteristics. The Obverse I1 classification paired with a standard Reverse Aa identifies the specific die types involved, with no die rarity or I-R rating recorded for this variety.
