1921-P VAM-1T

Description

Discovered by Kevin Frank in December 2006, the 1921 Peace Dollar VAM-1T features a thin, long die scratch on the reverse (die Aa) running from the right side of the R through the middle of IC and over to the left side of A in AMERICA — effectively tracing a path through the letters RICA. This reverse die scratch is paired with obverse die I 1, and the variety appears on the scarce high-relief first-year Peace Dollar, the only year Anthony de Francisci's design was struck in its original bold sculptural depth. Die scratches traversing multiple letters create particularly long and visible raised lines on struck coins, and the path through RICA on the reverse provides a clear diagnostic for attribution. The 1921 Peace Dollar's relatively limited production compared to later years — combined with its high-relief format and collector demand — means that VAM varieties from this date are actively sought by both series specialists and type collectors who appreciate the design's dramatic original relief.
