Description
Rim cud variety on the 1921-D Morgan Dollar, discovered by Rob Joyce in March 2004. Classified as IV 1 with reverse D2a, VAM-1AQ shows a die break on the rim that extends through the denticles into the field, forming a cud between the B and U in PLURIBUS — positioned at approximately 12:30 on the obverse. Since the 1921 dates were part of the master die, there is no date position variation (DPIS) among working dies for this issue. The Denver Mint struck 20.3 million Morgan Dollars in 1921, the resumption year after a three-year production hiatus, using freshly prepared hubs and dies that in many cases showed accelerated wear due to the rapid production pace demanded by the Pittman Act. Rim cuds on Morgan Dollars, particularly from high-mintage dates like 1921-D, attract both VAM collectors and die break specialists. The rarity designation of 189 places this in an intermediate scarcity tier within the VAM population reporting framework.
