Description

Discovered by Mark Kimpton in October 2003 and marked with a three-star desirability rating, this 1921-D Morgan Dollar variety documents a dramatic die fill where the lowercase d in "God" is almost completely missing — creating the visual impression that the motto reads "In Go We Trust" rather than the intended "In God We Trust." The full VAM classification reads IV 1 - D2a (Filled d of God) (189), and the variety is noted as a duplicate listing of 1921-D VAM-1P1 and 1P2, indicating that this die fill condition was independently documented under multiple VAM numbers before the duplication was recognized. Die fills occur when foreign material — metal debris, lubricant, or environmental contaminants — packs into the recesses of a die letter, preventing the full design from transferring to the struck coin. On VAM-1AO, the recessed areas of the lowercase d accumulated enough fill material to render the letter nearly invisible, a condition that would have affected a run of coins before the die was cleaned or replaced. The 1921-D Morgan Dollar was part of the series' final production year, struck at the Denver Mint as part of the Pittman Act replacement coinage program. The three-star desirability rating assigned by VAMWorld editors indicates high collector interest, as missing or altered motto letters on Morgan Dollars have historically attracted strong demand from both variety collectors and error enthusiasts. The nearly complete absence of the d transforms the coin's appearance in a way that is immediately noticeable without magnification, making this one of the more visually accessible Morgan Dollar VAM varieties.
