1921-D VAM-10A

Description

Discovered by Rob Joyce in September 2004, the 1921-D VAM-10A is classified as IV 8, D2f and identified by a diagonal die gouge running from the top of the left wreath to the right on the reverse. The full description includes doubled date, doubled reverse legend, and tripled left stars as associated features from the parent die pair. Because 1921 dates were part of the master die, there is no variation in date position across different die pairs of this year, a characteristic unique to the final-year Morgan Dollar production. A March 2012 research note observed that the 1921-D VAM-10 and VAM-10A may not share the same die pair, as an attributed ANACS MS-61 example of VAM-10 shows die cracks that do not match those documented on VAM-10A. The Denver Mint struck Morgan Dollars only in 1921, making all Denver-mint Morgan varieties one-year-only issues. The 1921-D production run was massive as the Treasury Department worked to replenish silver dollar reserves under the Pittman Act, and the high output generated numerous die pairs and a correspondingly rich variety population.
