Description

Third reverse cud for the 1920 San Francisco Lincoln Wheat Cent, recording rim failure during the early post-WWI transition to peacetime output. San Francisco struck approximately 46.2 million cents in 1920, a decline from wartime peaks but still consuming enough dies for three documented reverse rim fractures. The cud formed when accumulated stress propagated a fracture through the reverse die rim, separating a section whose cavity filled with bronze planchet metal. Three cuds for 1920-S is modest compared to the prolific fifteen from the preceding 1919-S. Cross-referenced as CU-1C-1920S-03R, cataloged by Cuds on Coins.
