1919 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Bearing the strongest intensity classification available, DDO-001 on the 1919 Philadelphia Mercury Dime displays very strong spread on IN, the dot separator, GOD, and TRUST on Adolph Weinman's obverse. The "very strong" designation indicates dramatically separated primary and secondary hub impressions clearly visible even at low magnification, making this one of the most pronounced doubled dies in the Mercury Dime series. Cross-referenced as 1-O-IV+VIII in the CONECA classification — variety 1, obverse, combined Class IV (offset hub) and Class VIII (tilted hub) — a compound doubling mechanism where the hub both shifted laterally and tilted between impressions, producing a displacement pattern carrying characteristics of both classes simultaneously. Die markers UVC-277 and DMR-002 confirm the working die. The 1919 Mercury Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams. With very strong visibility and the primary DDO-001 catalog position, this variety commands significant collector attention. IN GOD WE TRUST provides the clearest attribution under even modest 3x to 5x magnification.
