Bearing the Wexler designation 1916-D 1¢ WRPM-002 with no other known cross-references, this repunched mintmark variety on the 1916 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent documents a second instance of mintmark misplacement on dies prepared for Denver production during the eighth year of the Lincoln Cent series. Repunched mintmarks on early Lincoln Cents occurred because branch mint marks were hand-punched into individual working dies at the Philadelphia Mint before the dies were shipped to their destination facilities. Each punch of the mintmark letter was performed manually using a small steel punch, and if the initial impression was misaligned, crooked, or insufficiently deep, the engraver would re-punch the letter in a corrected position — leaving traces of the first attempt visible alongside the final placement.
