1914-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1914-D 25¢ WDDO-001 and extensively cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-25-1914D-101 and Lawrence #102, this doubled die obverse variety appears on a 1914-D Barber quarter struck at the Denver Mint. The Barber quarter, designed by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber and produced from 1892 through 1916, was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter. Denver produced 3,046,000 quarters in 1914, a moderate mintage that makes the base coin accessible but not common. The doubling on WDDO-001 shows as a spread towards the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, the left stars (close on the right stars), the ribbon, the turban, the center leaves, the eyelid, and the date. This spread pattern is consistent with a Class II (distorted hub) doubling mechanism where the hub was slightly rotated during a secondary impression. Obverse die markers include identification as a Type II obverse, while the reverse is a Type III. A small die gouge to the right of the upper first A in AMERICA serves as a reverse attribution diagnostic. The multiple cross-references in major variety references including the Cherrypickers' Guide and the Lawrence catalog indicate this is a well-recognized and widely published variety. The Barber quarter series features Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a laurel wreath, and the detailed turban, ribbon, and inscription elements provide numerous pickup points where hub doubling becomes visible. With only two more years of production remaining after 1914, this WDDO-001 represents one of the later doubled die obverse varieties in the Barber quarter series.
