1913-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Bearing the RPM-001 designation — the primary repunched mintmark for the date — this 1913-S Lincoln Wheat Cent shows an S/S orientation with the secondary mint mark rotated clockwise from the primary. Documented by VarietyVista with codes UVC-1050 and DMR-002, this variety comes from a low-mintage San Francisco issue that already commands a premium in any condition. Struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc), the 1913-S had one of the lower mintages in the early Wheat Cent series, making die varieties from this date inherently scarce. Repunched mintmarks from this period resulted from the hand-punching process at branch mints: a die sinker positioned the S punch over the working die and struck it with a mallet, but the clockwise rotation on the first impression necessitated a corrective second blow. The overlapping S letters are visible under moderate magnification. As RPM-001, this represents the most prominent and likely the most frequently encountered repunched mintmark for the date, though "frequently" is relative given the 1913-S's modest original production at the San Francisco Mint.
