1913 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

From the inaugural year of the Buffalo nickel series, the 1913 WDDR-005 displays a spread towards the center on FIVE CENTS, USA, and the dots on the Type II reverse. The Type II reverse, introduced partway through 1913 to replace the original raised-mound design, features the denomination on a recessed flat area below the bison, and it is this recessed-mound version that bears the doubling on this variety. The Wexler designation is 1913 5¢ WDDR-005. Obverse die markers are extensive and distinctive: die clash remnants appear to the right of the Native American portrait's eye, a short north-south die scratch marks the bottom of the neck, multiple north-south die scratches including two forming a V shape are present at the throat, and additional north-south die scratches appear in front of the bottom lip. On the reverse, a long curved die scratch runs below the buffalo's chin. The abundance of die clash remnants and scratches on the obverse suggests this die pair saw significant use or experienced multiple clash events during its service life in the first year of Buffalo nickel production.
