RCD-1c-1909S-06R Retained Cud

Description

Found on the key-date 1909-S Lincoln Wheat cent, this retained cud documented by Cuds on Coins appears at the 6 o'clock position on the reverse. A retained cud occurs when a section of the die cracks and begins to separate at the rim but remains partially attached, creating a depressed or distorted area on the struck coin rather than the raised featureless blob associated with a full cud. The 06R position places this break near the bottom of the reverse, in the vicinity of the wheat stalk bases or lower legend. The 1909-S Lincoln cent is a key date in the series with a mintage of only 1,825,000 for the regular issue (excluding V.D.B. reverses), making any die variety on this date especially desirable to collectors. Retained cuds are generally scarcer than full cuds because the cracked die segment often breaks away entirely after relatively few additional strikes, limiting the number of coins produced in the retained state.
