Description

This 1909-S Lincoln wheat cent carries the VDDR-001 doubled die reverse, cross-referenced as FS-1502. Light doubling spread is visible on TE of UNITED, F of OF, TA of STATES, and M of AMERICA. The obverse is listed as RPM-002, showing an S over horizontal S repunched mintmark. The reverse die is identified as RDV-004 (deep cut N, no V.D.B.) or RDV-003 (shallow cut N, no V.D.B.), representing different reverse die varieties used in the first year of Lincoln cent production. Die markers are cataloged under UVC and DMR designations. Stage A presents an early die state reverse with the obverse confirmed as RPM-002 in very late die state. Stage B is recorded as mid-die state and Stage C as late die state, both unconfirmed. The 1909-S is the key San Francisco issue of the inaugural Lincoln cent year, and the combination of a doubled die reverse with a repunched mintmark on the same coin makes this a notable die marriage for early Lincoln cent specialists.
