Description

This 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent with VDB initials is the fifth documented cud for the very first year of the Lincoln Cent series. Victor David Brenner's initials VDB appeared prominently on the reverse of the earliest 1909 Lincoln Cents, but public criticism of their size and visibility led the Mint to remove them after only a few weeks of production, making VDB cents a limited and highly sought issue. A cud forms when a portion of the die rim fractures away, leaving a raised blank area on the struck coin. Attributed by Cuds on Coins. While the previous entry documents a cud on the 1909 Indian Head Cent marking the end of that series, this variety represents the beginning of the Lincoln Cent series that continues to the present day. Both varieties share the 1909 date but bookend one of the most significant design transitions in United States coinage history. The brief production window for VDB cents makes any die variety on this issue particularly noteworthy for Lincoln Cent specialists.
