Description

Fourth documented reverse rim cud on the 1909 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent — the inaugural year of Victor David Brenner's beloved Lincoln design. A rim cud forms when a section of the die at the rim fractures and breaks away completely, leaving a void that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised, shapeless mass. The parent coin is specifically the VDB variety, bearing Brenner's initials on the reverse — the same initials whose prominent placement caused public controversy and led the Mint to remove them mid-year.
