The VDB initials of designer Victor David Brenner appeared on the reverse of Lincoln cents only during a portion of the 1909 production run before public outcry over their prominence led to their removal, making any die variety on the 1909 VDB issue historically significant. The cud itself is a major die break at the rim where a section of the die edge fractured and separated completely, producing a raised featureless blob at the coin's rim when the damaged die continued to strike planchets.
