Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as WRPD-003 for the 1906-D Barber Dime, this repunched date variety preserves evidence of the hand-punching process used to apply date digits to working dies. A repunched date occurs when the date logotype is impressed into the die multiple times at slightly different positions, leaving overlapping impressions visible under magnification as shadows adjacent to the final digit placement. The Barber Dime series, designed by Charles E. Barber and struck from 1892 through 1916, employed manual die preparation that made repunched dates an inherent byproduct. The 1906-D was struck at the Denver Mint, which opened that very year, making this among the earliest Denver Mint dime production.
