1906-D Misplaced Date WMPD-002

Description

During the hand-punch era of die preparation, mint workers positioned each date digit individually into the working die using a steel punch and mallet. Occasionally a digit was struck into the wrong location, then corrected with a second impression in the proper position, leaving ghost remnants of the initial misplaced punch visible on struck coins. This 1906-D Barber Dime preserves exactly such evidence, cataloged by the Wexler Team as WMPD-002. Denver Mint Barber Dimes from the early twentieth century were produced in moderate quantities, with the D mintmark hand-applied separately from the date digits, adding another variable to the die preparation process. Charles Barber's Liberty Head design, which served on the dime from 1892 through 1916, featured a date placement in the lower obverse field where misplaced digit traces can sometimes be detected within or near the primary numerals under magnification. As the second cataloged misplaced date for the 1906-D, WMPD-002 documents a die-making imprecision specific to the Denver facility, where remnants of the initial mispunched digit survived the correction process and were transferred to every coin struck from the affected die.
