1904-O VAM-2

Description

One of the oldest VAM discoveries on record, the 1904-O Morgan Dollar VAM-2 was first identified by George Mallis in July 1964 — among the very earliest entries in what became the Van Allen-Mallis classification system. The variety, revised since initial discovery, is classified III2 1 · C4b: O Tilted Left. The obverse is a normal die with a closed 9 in the date. The reverse C4b die shows the III O mint mark tilted to the left — the defining characteristic. A reverse die marker — polishing lines in the wreath bow — provides a secondary identification point. An important historical note: the Bar O mintmark feature was removed from this listing in 2010 and separately established as 1904-O VAM-45, dividing what had been a combined entry. Struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint under George T. Morgan's design, the 1904-O was among the final high-mintage New Orleans issues before the mint closed in 1906. The 1964 discovery, the 2010 VAM-45 separation, and the tilted-left O mint mark make VAM-2 a historically grounded variety in the 1904-O Morgan Dollar census. =1904-O VAM-2 O Tilted Left= Discovered by George Mallis, July 1964.
