Description

Discovered by Martin Field in February 1979, the 1904-O VAM-1A Morgan Dollar is classified as "Polishing Lines on Reverse" under catalog code III21 - C4a. The defining characteristic is heavy polishing lines visible in the eagle's wings, eagle's tail feathers, and arrow feathers on the reverse — evidence of deliberate die maintenance performed by Mint personnel during the die's production life. Die polishing was a routine maintenance operation at nineteenth-century Mint facilities: when die surfaces accumulated wear, minor damage, or surface roughness from extended use, workers would polish the die face to restore striking quality and extend the die's useful life. However, polishing left its own marks — directional lines or striations that transferred as raised features on subsequently struck coins, creating the "polishing lines" that define this VAM variety. The reverse classification C4a identifies a specific reverse die type within the New Orleans Mint die inventory for 1904. The 1904-O Morgan Dollar had a mintage of approximately 3.72 million pieces from the New Orleans Mint, which was operating in its final years of Morgan Dollar production — the series would be suspended after 1904 and not resumed until the brief 1921 revival. New Orleans was the last of the original branch mints established in 1838 still producing silver dollars, and dies used there experienced the particular environmental challenges of the Gulf Coast climate, including humidity that could affect die surface condition between production runs. Martin Field's 1979 discovery documented this maintenance-related variety during the formative period of comprehensive VAM cataloging, when researchers were systematically examining every accessible Morgan Dollar for attributable die characteristics.
