Description

Discovered by Martin Field in August 1979, this New Orleans Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-16 under classification III2 9 with a C4a reverse, titled Slanted Date, carrying a rarity rating of 181. The obverse is defined by a date set at a noticeable slant with the 1 closer to the rim than the 4. This variety carries an unusual attribution note: its existence has been questioned because several other 1904-O VAMs also feature slanted dates, including VAM-1A and VAM-41/44. Plate photos for VAM-16 appear to match what is now designated VAM-41, raising the possibility of a duplicate listing. Collectors believing they have this variety should compare specimens carefully against both the VAM-16 and VAM-41 plates. The C4a reverse carries no distinguishing features beyond the standard type. As 1904 was the final New Orleans Morgan dollar production year before the series ended, die varieties from this date carry particular historical interest among specialists.
