Description

ELIMINATED in August 2010 — this 1904 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar VAM-13A has been removed from the active VAM catalog and reclassified under 1904-O VAM-23B. Discovered in 2010 by Pat Mullen, the original designation was 13A III21, C4f (High O, Clashed Obverse n), die pair 189. The obverse showed a clashed die with a partial n from the reverse IN transferred next to Liberty's neck, and a notch at the top of the first 9 in the date. The High O designation described the elevated mint mark position. Upon further analysis, the variety was determined to duplicate an existing catalog entry, leading to its August 2010 elimination and consolidation into VAM-23B. Eliminated VAMs remain documented in the reference to prevent future re-submission of the same variety under a new number, and collectors encountering coins matching VAM-13A should attribute them as VAM-23B. The rapid discovery-to-elimination timeline — both occurring in 2010 — reflects the self-correcting nature of the VAM cataloging process, where newly submitted varieties are cross-checked against existing entries and consolidated when duplication is identified.
