1904-O VAM-13

Description

Discovered by Martin Field in February 1979 and revised in 2009, this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-13 under Classification 13 III2 1, C4f, with die pair 181. The variety is described as High O, with the date at the right edge of normal position. The reverse features an O mint mark set high, centered, and upright, classified as Type III. Heavy polishing lines in the wreath bow, eagle's tail feathers, and eagle's neck serve as distinctive die markers. This variety notably occurs with a rotated reverse of 24 to 46 degrees counterclockwise, a significant rotation that collectors should verify when examining potential examples. Rotation of this magnitude indicates the dies were not properly locked in alignment during installation. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1904-O Morgan Dollar represents the final year of regular production at the New Orleans Mint before the series entered a seventeen-year hiatus. The combination of high mint mark placement, heavy polishing evidence, and notable die rotation gives VAM-13 a distinctive profile among 1904-O varieties.
