1903-O VAM-24

Description

Discovered by Brent Fogelberg in March 2025, this New Orleans Morgan dollar is freshly cataloged as VAM-24 with classification III2 15 and a C3k reverse under the title Low Date, Pitted N, O Slightly High. The obverse positions the date set right within normal range and slightly low. Obverse die markers include a long scratch in front of Liberty's ear and a scratch in the base of the E in LIBERTY near the lower right serif. On the reverse, the O mintmark is set slightly high and slightly to the right of its typical position. Light pitting surrounds the N in ONE and the neighboring leaves, with a scratch visible through the outer leaf above the left side of the N. Reverse die markers include a vertical scratch in the space right of the bow and a curved scratch in the wing-neck gap. The die position index shows RE3/LE5. As one of the most recently discovered Morgan dollar VAMs at the time of cataloging, VAM-24 demonstrates that the 1903-O Morgan dollar series continues to yield new varieties even well into the twenty-first century, rewarding careful examination of coins from a date with over 4.4 million original mintage.
