1903-O VAM-13A

Description

VAM-13A in the 1903-O Morgan Dollar series (III2 9 C4d: Doubled Profile, High O, Die Chip RI) is a renumbered variety — formerly known as VAM-16A before being redesignated as VAM-13A to reflect its die-pair relationship with VAM-13. Collectors holding attribution documentation under the VAM-16A designation should note this renumbering. VAM-13A shares the same die pair as VAM-13 and represents a later die state distinguished by a die crack running through the top of the R in PLURIBUS upward to the denticles above U and I, with a die chip formed between the R and I. The reverse C4d die also shows the O mintmark in a high position. Discovered in August 2018 by Brent Fogelberg, VAM-13A is a mid-series discovery in the 1903-O Morgan Dollar population. The 1903-O Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint under George T. Morgan's design. The die chip between R and I in PLURIBUS is the critical diagnostic that separates VAM-13A from the earlier VAM-13 die state, making it visible on struck coins as a raised lump in that letter gap.
