Description
Discovered by Laurence Galbraith in July 2006 and classified as III29 C4a, this 1903 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar features a doubled profile — slight doubling on Liberty's front hair, nose, chin, and the top of the Phrygian cap, with very slight doubling inside the right of the ear. The O mintmark is centered, upright, and set to the right. The 1903-O occupies a position of exceptional importance as one of the Morgan Dollar series' key dates, with a mintage of only 4,450,000 and dramatically lower survival rates in higher grades. Original Mint State examples are among the most valuable Morgan Dollars, making any documented die variety on this date inherently significant. The doubled profile designation indicates the hub shift affected Liberty's facial features and cap rather than the peripheral legends or date. Laurence Galbraith's 2006 discovery extended the catalog for this coveted date. VAM-17 is a desirable crossover variety appealing to collectors pursuing both key-date Morgan Dollars and die variety attributions.
