1903-O VAM-16
Error
Description
Discovered by John Roberts in September 2002, the 1903-O VAM-16 Morgan Dollar combines a doubled profile on the obverse with a High O mintmark placement on the reverse. Cataloged as die pairing III29 - C4d with Rarity Scale 181, the obverse die designated III29 shows slightly doubled features across the bottom of the front hair, nose, and chin, plus the top of the Phrygian cap, with very slight doubling on the right inside of the ear — a comprehensive range of portrait doubling that affects multiple facial features. The profile doubling results from a slight misalignment during the hubbing process that displaced the portrait elements between hub impressions. The reverse High O indicates the New Orleans mintmark was positioned higher than normal within the wreath, a placement diagnostic readily visible without magnification. The 1903-O Morgan Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint with a production of approximately 4.45 million pieces, a moderate mintage that places it in the middle range of New Orleans Morgan Dollar output. The New Orleans Mint operated from 1838 to 1909, and its Morgan Dollar production from 1879 through 1904 represents one of the most actively collected segments of the series. VAM-16's combination of portrait doubling with a mintmark position anomaly provides two independent diagnostic categories on a single die marriage, making it a variety that engages collectors interested in both hubbing errors and mintmark placement studies.
