Description
Discovered by Brent Fogelberg in March 2000, the 1903-O VAM-15 Morgan Dollar is classified 15 III21 with a C4h reverse and documents an O/O Right repunched mintmark. The O mintmark was punched at least twice, with the second impression offset to the right of the first, creating overlapping profiles visible under magnification. Catalog commentary notes the presence of a collar clash on certain specimens, adding a secondary error to the mintmark repunching. The O/O designation itself has been subject to debate among researchers — whether the apparent repunching represents a true secondary mintmark impression or another die phenomenon remains an active discussion point in the VAM community. This uncertainty is documented in the catalog notes rather than suppressed, reflecting the transparent nature of VAM scholarship. The 1903-O Morgan Dollar carries particular significance in numismatic history: with a mintage of 4,450,000, the business strike is common, but the date became legendary when the Treasury released bags of uncirculated examples in the 1960s, dramatically shifting known populations.
