1900-S VAM-6B

Description

VAM-6B on the 1900 San Francisco Morgan Dollar carries an outstanding rarity rating of I-3 R-6 and was discovered in 2011. The variety is catalogued as 6B, obverse III2 2, reverse C3d, die pair 189, with the attribution: Near Date, S Set High, Die Breaks Cap Fold and Hair. An R-6 rating indicates extreme rarity with an estimated population of fewer than 13 known examples, placing VAM-6B among the most elusive 1900-S varieties. The obverse is a later die state with a vertical die crack through the Phrygian cap fold and die breaks at the top and bottom of that fold. A tiny die chip is present in the hair above the cap. The date is positioned close to the rim — the Near Date placement — and the S mintmark is set high. The convergence of multiple die failures at the cap fold and hair, combined with the exceptional rarity rating, makes this one of the premier 1900-S Morgan Dollar varieties.
